Paper fortune tellers are objects of play for children. But the question of our futures endures beyond childhood. As we grow we consider the implications of fate versus free will. How often is our path determined by ourselves or by things beyond our control?

Figures are used in an iconographic manner, a vessel to the message that what is familiar is also unknown. Graphic two dimensional backgrounds are their own symbolic, hieroglyphic type language and are used to further convey the meaning of the overall image. Combining senses of realism with emotional expressionism, each work is version of reality interpreted and invented.

The doll is an object given to girls to create play that mimics the expectations of their future roles. The doll is ubiquitous, the same over and over, but carries a multitude of meanings. What are these meanings and what happens when we grow up and do not conform to these expectations?

Your mother’s china
Teacups for target practice
Her old dog howls

Sees a rat, names it Fred
A home of her own
Sips gin from teacups
Tossed everything else on the lawn
She kept the china
Nucleus is a project begun in 2020 and continuing. Exploring the idea of what home is and how one is connected to their home. Using traditional paper piecing quilt methods, the hexagons are hand sewn. The houses are printed on fabric and sewn to the center. By incorporating traditional domestic handwork with the concept of the nuclear family, this series reflects and questions our ideas of home.
